A dry nose is a painful and annoying sensation that can keep you awake at night. A low amount of moisture in the air, some illnesses and allergies can cause a dry nose. Repeatedly blowing your nose is another cause of dry nose. Luckily, there are several solutions that can provide relief.

Place a warm mist or cool mist humidifier in your home. The humidifier will put water in the air that will help moisturise your nostrils along with the skin outside the nose. Humidifiers can also ease other symptoms you may be experiencing in addition to your dry nose, including an itchy and sore throat or a sinus headache. Use a cold mist humidifier in the summer and a hot air humidifier in the winter.

Saline nasal spray

Over-the-counter saline nasal spray moisturises the nose and relieves itching. The solution consists of salt water, and some nasal sprays include preservatives to keep bacteria from growing within the spray. According to research from the Eastern Virginia Medical School, preservatives used in some nasal sprays also kill important nasal cells. If possible, select a nasal spray that does not contain preservatives.

Facial steam bath

A facial steam bath containing essential oils is a natural way to soothe the nasal passages and ease nasal dryness. Pour 1.185 litres (5 cups) of water into a pan. Add five drops of lavender essential oil and bring water to a boil. You can also use rosemary or almond essential oil. Pour hot water into a large ceramic bowl. Place your face over the bowl and allow steam to penetrate the nose.

Aloe vera

Aloe vera is another natural remedy for dry nostrils. Use a cotton swab to dab aloe vera gel into dry nostrils and around the nose. Allow aloe vera to soak in and then wipe away excess with a cotton ball. If you do not have any aloe vera, use full-fat milk or cream instead.
