Hi, I'm Charlotte Lawson, a Registered Licensed Dietitian here in Tampa Bay, Florida and today, I'm going to go over how you can convert the grams of fat into calories. A few things you'll need to help this process go a little bit smoother are a pen, some paper, a calculator and definitely a nutrition facts label. Nutrition facts label is your key to guiding your nutrition. Even when you're out at a restaurant, you can ask for it there or when you're grocery shopping, check those labels. Here's an example of a few fast food facts. These are plainly laid out for the fat grams and the calories. First and foremost, just to help you understand, one gram of fat equals nine calories. So, for instance here, nine grams of fat is going to be nine grams times nine calories equaling eighty one calories. So, let's try another example here. A small fish or small French fry here. We have ten grams of fat. Ten times nine equals ninety. Ninety calories of these product come from fat. We'll do a little bit bigger one here. Fish and fries. I'm going to use my handy dandy calculator to help with this one. Thirty seven times 9 calories per gram is three hundred and thirty three calories. You know that three hundred and thirty three calories are coming from fat, other these fish and fries.
