A modern cult classic, the film Donnie Darko is the tale of a strange teenage boy plagued by apocalyptic visions of the future. Through wormholes and other dimension-bending phenomena, he is visited by a ghoulish-looking rabbit named Frank who warns him of things to come. The film has a devoted following thanks to its twisted, complex plot and is filled with characters that provide excellent Halloween-costume inspiration.

Donnie, the titular protagonist of the film Donnie Darko, is an obvious costume choice for male fans of the flick. Though much of Donnie's outfits throughout the movie are too drab to make a striking costume, he does wear a sweatsuit with the bones of a human skeleton printed on the front, along with a grey hoodie, during several prominent scenes in the film. The memorable outfit will work particularly well on those with dark brown hair like that of lead actor Jake Gyllenhaal, amping up the resemblance factor. Those in search of a more-involved costume could create something to portray Donnie after he's been killed in an aeroplane crash in the movie's final moments, fashioning a piece of border to make it seem like they've been impaled.
A demonic-looking rabbit with a row of jagged teeth, Frank is the strange, otherworldly creature who tells Donnie about the pending end of the world. Perhaps the most famous visual from the film, Frank looks like a man in a weird, oversized-rabbit costume. The body is a suit of matted grey fur with a light-coloured patch over the abdomen. The face has a skeletal appearance with pupil-less eyes and long, spindly ears. Crafty types can try creating their own mask, though commercial Frank outfits are available, too.
One of the more pernicious characters in Donnie Darko, Kitty Farmer is also one of its most memorable, if not loathed. A mean-spirited, book-banning teacher, Farmer wears her hair in a distinctive beehive-pompadour, always accompanied by a prim, schoolmarm dress. With a teasing comb and hairspray, women can turn their hair into a helmet like Farmer's and combine it with a prim dress from a second-hand shop.
Various Other Characters
Aside from the main characters, the world of Donnie Darko is populated by a sizeable supporting cast, providing plenty of costume choices. Teenage girls, particularly those with long brown hair, can wear a Catholic-school-style uniform to go as Donnie's girlfriend, Gretchen Ross. To go as Ricky Danforth, a bully who attacks Donnie after a party, wear a denim vest and a mask made from pantyhose pulled over your head.
