What to Wear With High-Waisted Shorts

High-waisted shorts are versatile in that they may be worn favourably by almost any body type. Further, details like buttons, seaming, strategically placed pockets, belts and cinching allow these shorts to be worn both as a complement or a focal wardrobe point. Wearing flats, sandals and/or a short T-shirt makes these shorts perfect for running errands. Pairing the same shorts with heels, metallic jewellery and a semi-formal blouse creates a church- or workplace-appropriate outfit.

Crop Tops

Shirts that are cropped at the waist are perfect wardrobe complements for casual high-waisted shorts like those of the denim variety. Because the hems of these shirts are sewn under the breast bone, the waist lines of high-waisted shorts are fully visible if worn with a crop top. If your high-waisted shorts are decorated with gilded buttons, different colour thread or a series of belts, a crop top will show off the details and allow the shorts to dominate the style. Crop tops are casual wear that are usually found in the junior's section of a department store. They are also referred to as belly shirts and midriff shirts. If you have a round stomach or conservative personality, wearing a pair of high-waisted shorts with your crop top may adequately cover your stomach while still allowing you to dress youthfully.

Ruffled Blouse

A collared, button-down blouse tucked into a pair of high-waisted shorts with cascading ruffles down the front turn a pair of shorts into semi-formal and even office-appropriate attire. Ruffles add softness and femininity to any look. Also, due to the layering of fabric required to create ruffles, ruffled clothing make excellent wardrobe focal points. With the eye drawn to the ruffles, monochromatic or plain, undecorated high-waisted shorts worn with this kind of blouse look like a thoughtful ensemble that does not require further accessorising.

Shorts, in general, accentuate the legs. High-waisted shorts shorten the torso making the legs look even longer. If your shorts and shirt are one colour, you may exaggerate the leggy look effect with the right accessories. Some of these may include pumps or high-heeled wedges that elongate the legs and tighten the leg muscles with every step. Another appropriate accessory that allows the eye to flow naturally from the top to the legs without much attention on the clothes being worn is a long necklace bead. If the bead is in contrasting colour to your outfit, casual observers will notice the bead and your legs first.
