The front door is the focal point of any home and is best painted in a contrasting colour to the house to attract attention and make the house easy to find. The colour of the door must also go well with the colour of the house. Match the colour of the front door to flowers growing around the front of house, or paint shutters on the outside of the house the same colour as the front door.

Brick Houses

According to Certified Interior Decorator and Home Stager Barbara Meglis, brick red houses and houses painted red look best with dark doors and light trim. For a contemporary look, try a dark purple front door with light tan or grey trim. For a classic look, paint the door black and the trim white. Attach brass handles, a knocker and other accents to complete the classic look.

Neutral Brown and Tan Houses

A variety of options exist for colours of doors when the house is a neutral colour. To some extent, the colour depends upon what you like best. A cream colour door will look best if the house is a shade of brown but will not show as much contrast as a lighter tan house. A rust colour door will look good on almost any neutral beige, tan or brown house. A black door with cream trim will look striking.

Bright Color Houses

A yellow house will look sharp with a black door and black shutters. A pink house will also look striking with a black door. Light grey and white houses are well suited to navy blue, maroon or black doors. Use white trim around dark doors for accent.
