The Fein Multimaster is a high-quality, hand-operated oscillating power tool. Together with a six-blade kit, it costs about £260 plus £9 for each additional blade, as of 2010. These electric tools can sand, saw, rout, precision cut, scrape and vacuum. Because of its initial high cost and the added expense of blade replacement, you may wish to explore less expensive alternatives available on the market.

Bosch PS -50 Multi-X
Another quality alternative to the Fein Multimaster is the Bosch PS 50 Multi-X, a cordless tool at about half the cost of the Fein. It's a quality product with blades and accessories available new on Amazon, com for about £104. Mark Clement, remodeler, author and writer of the Editors Choice segment for HGTV.com comments, "Bosch's new PS-50 Multi-X is one of those tools I call a 'get out of jamb free tool.' You'll fall in love with it the minute it lives up to its name -- and gets you out of a jam (or jamb)."
In a November 2008 review, Toolsnob.com reported, "The Sonicrafter is a corded tool so it's to be compared mostly with the Dremel and the Fein and not the cordless Bosch. So how does it measure up? Is it a good tool? The answer is 'yes.' In fact, after doing a project with it, it's our favourite of the current crop of non-Fein oscillating tools." The deluxe kit including 72 pieces is available at Lowe's for £116 as of 2010, less than half the cost of its Fein counterpart.
Dremel has recently introduced a Multi-Max multifunction tool to compete with its industry rivals. For about £65, this more powerful version of the £26 Dremel Multi-Pro has a 1.5 Amp motor that will power through even a heavy oak door jamb. This versatile, rugged tool oscillates within a range of 10,000 to 21,000 oscillations per minute (OPM) which enhances operator control .
