Xylitol, a naturally occurring sugar alcohol, appears in several fruits and vegetables, such as raspberries and cauliflower. Scientists have found that xylitol works as an effective sugar substitute in foods. According to the document "What is Xylitol?", released by the Iowa Department of Public Health, xylitol can help improve dental health and can be safely used by anyone over 4 years old. A number of chewing gums now contain xylitol, and the IDPH recommends using these products each day.
