Age spots, also known as liver spots, are common in women over 40; however, they can affect younger people as well, according to Mayo Clinic. These brown spots can be bothersome to many and while over-the-counter medication is available, it can be quite costly. Before purchasing these medications, try a few home remedies to reduce the appearance of age spots.

Horseradish

Use horseradish to fade the appearance of brown spots and freckles, according to grannymed.com. Take a horseradish that is about 4 inches long and grate it into 1/4 cup of vinegar. Let this mixture sit in a jar with a lid for two weeks and shake it daily. After two weeks, strain it into a small container with a lid and store it in the refrigerator. Apply a small amount directly to the age spots three times a day. Only use externally and if your skin has a reaction, discontinue use immediately.

Almonds

Take two almonds and grind them until they are extremely fine. Mix the almonds with 1/2 tsp of lime juice and an egg white. Apply the mixture to your face and leave it to dry for at least 15 minutes. Wash off with warm water and repeat as often as needed.

Onion

Mix 2 tbsp of onion juice with 2 tbsp of apple cider vinegar and apply it directly to your age spot. The age spots will slowly fade away. You can use this mixture daily or as often as needed.

Fresh Garlic

Rub the juice of fresh garlic directly on age spots with a cotton ball. Do this twice a day for at least six to eight weeks. After about 15 minutes rinse your face with warm water. If you apply the juice at night, let it stay on overnight and rinse your face the next morning.

Lemon

If your skin is sensitive to citrus, avoid this remedy. Cut a lemon in half and rub it directly on the age spot. Some people add horseradish juice or vinegar to the lemon, and others scrub the lemon juice with sugar. Use this remedy once or twice a day. (Be aware that the combination of lemon juice and sunlight can cause skin irritation in some individuals.)

Aloe Vera

Rub aloe vera gel on the brown spots at least twice a day for a month or two. Aloe vera also helps your skin to glow and has other health benefits, according to the Ayurveda Herbal Remedy website.
