Mercury Marine is a company that manufactures boating supplies, including engines, controls, propellers and controls. The Mercury outboard engine attaches to the rear of the boat, and they are self-contained units, which means that the engine, gears and propeller are stored within a single casing. Testing and diagnostic tools help you figure out what is wrong with your engine even if you are not at the dock. You can download software programs to your laptop, or you can use self-contained units that plug into the system's 10-pin USB (universal serial bus) plug.

Outboard Diagnostic Tool Kit

The CDI Outboard Engine Diagnostic Tool Kit and Software system comes with its own aluminium storage case, which protects it from the elements. The hardware within this kit include a spark test, DVA (Direct Voltage Adapter) adaptor, a probe set and a multimeter, which measures electrical currents, including electrical currents, electrical resistance (an object that resists an electrical current) and voltage (a force that pushes electrical currents between two points). This toolkit also features a diagnostic software program that is compatible with the Windows operating system. This tool allows you to capture error codes, which help you figure out what is wrong with your system. This software program is compatible with the following outboard engines: Mercury 2001, Verado, EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection), Optimax and I/O (inboard/outboard) engines.

Diacom Marine

This is a software program that is compatible with Windows XP, Vista and 7, and it is compatible with the following engines: Mercury outboards, Flagship Marine, Volvo Penta, MerCruiser, Pleasurecraft Marine, Ilmor, Crusader, Kodiak, Marine Power, Indmar and Panther Airboats. This tool allows you to view how well your EFI system is performing, and it outputs error codes. You can also run tests and capture real-time data on your EFI system. The live data will help you figure out where problems are happening as you are running the boat. You can then export this data to other programs, or print it out.

Scan Tool

The Scan Tool was originally made only for MerCruiser, Volvo Penta, Pleasurecraft Marine, Indmar, Marine Power, Crusader, Kodiak, Panther Air Boats and Flagship Marine. You now, however, can purchase an adaptor to make this system work with the Mercury outboard engines. This tool plugs into your 10-pin USB plug, and the screen will adapt to the type of engine that you have installed. This tool communicates with the ECM (engine control and monitoring) unit, and it will output any fault codes that it finds. You can also run power balance tests, which help you figure out what's wrong with a cylinder.
