Gifts for Elderly Mothers
Look for gifts that offer simplicity to your mother's life. (present image by Yekaterina Choupova from Fotolia.com)

Buying gifts for the elderly can be difficult. They've accumulated most of the generic gifts and you've probably exhausted every idea you can think of. Your Mom probably already has her share of kitchenware, picture frames and jewellery. It's safe to say she probably doesn't need any new clothes, either. Instead, put some thought into gifts that will provide a much needed convenience in her life. Consider giving her things you can enjoy together because she will appreciate the extra time spent with you.

Convenience

Make your mom's life a little easier by getting her something she can use daily. Consider a jar opener or a talking scale. If she had trouble seeing smaller numbers, get her a remote or a phone with larger numbers.

Pamper Her

Buy your Mom a new back and neck pillow or a full-length back massager. Foot baths also make great gifts for the elderly and are something they can use while they are watching television or folding clothes.

A Night Out

Take your mother for a night out. Invite her to dinner at her favourite restaurant. This will give her a reason to look her best and get her out of the house for an evening. She'll love the fresh air and company that you're giving her.

Scrapbook

Create a scrapbook for your Mom. Start with pictures of memorable occasions from when you were younger. Include pictures of your birth, first day of school, birthdays, Mother's day celebrations and holiday parties. When you visit her on her birthday, take a few more pictures for her to include at the end of her scrapbook.

Hire a Housekeeper

Hire someone to help clean your mother's home once a week. Find someone who will work with your mom to complete tasks without making her feel uncomfortable. For example, if your Mom prefers to wash her own clothes, the housekeeper can take on dish washing duties and dusting instead.

Books on CD

If your Mom enjoys reading, buy her a few books on tape. This will make it more convenient for her if she has difficulties reading books. She can also listen to these while performing household chores, knitting, or just relaxing on her favourite chair.
