Snipping tools allow you to perform tasks such as taking screenshots, capturing text or saving searches. You can then save this information or e-mail it to yourself or others. Most of these programs are free to use, and some were created by Microsoft specifically for its operating systems. Others must be purchased.

Snip-It Pro 2.5

This is a shareware program, which means you can try it for free for a limited period of time (30 days in this case), but the full version must be purchased. It is compatible with Windows 98, 2000, 2003, Server 2008, Me (Millennium), XP, Vista and 7. It allows you to capture and store code, including JavaScript functions, expressions, XML (Extensible Markup Language) configurations and SQL (Structured Query Language) searches. The Snippet Toolbar rests on one side of the screen, and you can drag and drop snippets into it. The Snippet Explorer allows you to edit and manipulate saved snippets. Snip-it Pro 2.5 also allows you to store snippets anywhere you like and share them with others. Other features include the ability to import and/or export snippets or save them as collections.

This is an add-on for Internet Explorer created by Microsoft, and allows you to capture text from the IE browser. You can then e-mail this information to yourself or others. It is compatible with Microsoft Outlook, Yahoo Mail, Google's Gmail, Microsoft Hotmail and Internet Explorer's MailTo feature. This tool is compatible with Windows XP and Vista, and also is compatible with Internet Explorer 6.0 or later versions. This tool is free to use, and can be downloaded from the Microsoft website.

Microsoft Snipping Tool

This is a freeware program, which means you can download and manipulate it without having to pay a licensing fee. It was developed by Microsoft, and allows you to take a virtual picture of the entire screen or only certain parts of it. Click and drag the mouse to select the part of the screen you want to capture. Snipping Tool will output this information to your clipboard or to a selected file. You can customise this program to suit your needs. It is compatible with Windows XP and Vista. If you have XP, you must download the program from the Microsoft website or a third-party site. It is not preinstalled in XP.
