In recent years Manchester, UK has become something of a destination for the British trendy set as well as international travellers seeking a taste of the English nightlife. With a thriving live music scene, a young and hip populace and the biggest football club in all of the UK, there is no wonder Manchester has become a cultural draw.

South Nightclub, Manchester

This no frills basement warehouse style nightclub is a short walk from Manchester Piccadilly and all about the music with live shows and DJ's every night playing hip-hop, funk, electro, soul, punk rock, 50s rock 'n roll, and everything in between. The DJ rules at South and that's the way the club wants it. The crowd is young and ready to rumble, and the drinks flow freely as tends to be the rule in the British nightclub scene. Expect drunks.

The Star and Garter

The Star and Garter is located in a Georgian building a few moments walk from Piccadilly station in Manchester. The club prides itself on existing outside of the mainstream with indie music, and a hipster crowd who shops up religiously for the reasonably priced drinks and the music scene. Known as the launching pad for the Smiths, the Star and Garter has been around and is reminiscent of an 80s East Village club, CBGB's or the like. Expect grime, a mixed crowd, good music and a taste of local Manchester club-going.

The 42nd Street Nightclub

The 42nd Street Nightclub borrows its name from the former centre for vice and mischief in the city of New York. Today New York's Time Square is a fantasy land of Disney plays and chains stores with little vice to speak of, and the same goes for the nightclub in Manchester. Geared toward the local student set, 42nd Street Nightclub has been serving the locals for some 20 years now with a mix of mainstream and indie music and theme parties like the "legendary 80s night."

Matt & Phred's Jazz Club

For the more mature crowd, Matt & Phred's Jazz Club has live music six nights a week in an elegant setting about 15 minutes walk from Piccadilly. Besides jazz, the club features poetry and literature events on a weekly basis, as well as serving pizzas and club food along with a full selection of beverages. Operational for over eight years Matt & Phred's is a great spot for those looking to avoid the mad student club scene in Manchester but still have a fun night out.
