Being a godparent means taking on a serious responsibility. In addition to serving as sponsors at a child's christening, godparents may be asked to help with the child's personal development and upbringing. Even if you do not have much money to spare, you can still express your thanks to your child's godparents by offering them an inexpensive but thoughtful gift.

Framed Photo

Purchase a frame which can hold two photos. Insert a photo of your child in one of the spaces. Insert a printed or handwritten note in the second space, explaining how much the godparent means to you and your child.

Photo Album

Write a thoughtful dedication on the first page of a blank photo album. Insert some photos of your child on the first few pages, but leave the rest blank. Take a photo of your child at every important occasion or milestone --- learning to crawl or walk, first tooth, birthdays and so on. Give or send the photo to the godparent, to fill in the photo album as your child grows. If the two godparents you have chosen live together, one photo album will be enough for both; if they are not part of the same couple, prepare one photo album for the godfather and one for the godmother.

Foot or Hand Print

Purchase a "paint your own" kit with a ceramic mug or coaster. Write your child's name, birth date and christening date on it, then add your child's footprint or handprint to the mug. Set the paint according to the instructions and wrap in festive paper. Prepare one mug for the godfather and one for the godmother, in different colours, so each will have a lasting memento of how much you and your child appreciate them.

If your child's godparents are religious, purchase a good quality bible for each of them and hand-write a dedication on the inside cover, along with your child's name, birth date and christening date. You can also insert a small photo of your child between the pages.
