Party themes can be based on just about anything, as long as a bit of creative thinking goes into the planning. If you enjoy the colours of red and black, this combination is applicable to a number of interesting themes. Think insects, China and differently covered foods, to name a few.

Ladybug Theme

A ladybug-themed party is an option that little girls may enjoy. Set the theme right away by sending invitations shaped like ladybirds. Cut an oval in the shape of a lady bird out of red construction paper, and add black dots. On the back of the bug, write the party details. Decorate your party space with red and black streamers and red balloons with black dots. Bake a circular cake, and frost it with red icing. Use chocolate cookies for the ladybug spots. To get party guests involved, set up a craft table where the little girls can design their own bugs and play games like pin-the-spots-on-the-ladybug.

China Theme

The colours of red and black are common in Chinese decorations. Hold a Chinese-themed party complete with authentic cuisine and decor. Hold the party outside, and transform your back deck with red Chinese lanterns hung from bamboo poles painted black. Find cut-outs of red Chinese dragons, and paste them onto a black background to hang throughout the party space. Serve Chinese food in a buffet style, so guests can experience a variety of dishes. If your party budget allows, hire someone versed in Chinese writing to paint the names of the guests on decorative paper as a party favour.

Food Theme

Base your party theme on red and black foods. Invite friends over for a cooking party where the majority of your dishes focus on foods of these colours. Make a salad with red peppers and sundried tomatoes. Prepare black bean soup with a side dish of wild rice, which has black husks. Top pizza or pasta with tomato sauce, and garnish with black mushrooms. For dessert, make a rich chocolate cake, so dark it almost appears black. Ask each guest to bring a recipe that involves black or red foods to share, and make copies for everyone to take home.
