Sending the kids off to day camp is a summertime tradition in America. Kids learn valuable skills in a healthy social environment while making friends and staying supervised during their parents' work hours. Summer camps schedule activities like canoeing, rope making, singing songs and playing colour war games. Themes for certain days selected by the camp director and counsellors entertain kids.

African Safari

A safari day is an adventurous theme for kids at camp. Purchase safari bucket hats for all the children. Introduce African animals to the children, and include educational information about each animal. Let the kids make African animals with craft foam, pom-poms, wiggly eyes, fake fur and pipe cleaners. Organise a safari scavenger hunt with miniature African animals as prizes. Set up face painting booths, and offer to paint kid’s faces as animal masks like tigers, lions, elephants and zebras. Play games like follow the leader only modify it to fit the safari theme by walking like an animal.

Grecian Times

A Grecian-themed camp day educates kids on the history of Greece and the vast interesting legends and myths. This cultural theme has a broad spectrum of activities and games to explore. Form the kids into teams, and hold the Olympic Games. The top three winning teams earn gold, silver and bronze metals. Since Greece is the birthplace of theatre, have the kids perform a play. Organise the children into groups, and each group will perform a different play of their choice. Use craft foam, pipe cleaners, wiggly eyes and other various materials to create monsters from the numerous Greek myths like Medusa who was a Gorgon.

Host a Camelot theme camp day for a magical experience. Set up tables so that the kids can make Merlin hats and wands. Purchase some supplies like cardboard tubes, glitter glue, stickers, craft foam, paint and large glow sticks. Hold a joust for the Knights of the Round Table. Let the knights make jousting poles from long cardboard or foam tubes. The ladies of the court tie a scarf or ribbon favour on their favourite knight’s joust. Everyone attends a festive dance afterward. Teach the children about the maypole dance that maidens performed during this historical time. Use a pole and tie several long ribbons to the pole.

Backwards Day

Backwards day is a whimsical idea for a camp theme day. Instruct children to wear their clothes backwards. Serve the days meals in reserve order starting with dessert and lunch and then breakfast ending the day. Make a backwards day rule that everyone must walk backwards all day long. Ask to children to help construct hats with mirrors attached to them for the children’s safety. Play kickball or baseball and tell the kids they have to run the bases in reverse order, starting the home plate and proceeding to third base.
