Losing and maintaining a healthy weight is a challenging task for anyone. Daily routines can often get in the way of meal planning, and high-calorie temptations seem to lie around every corner. An easy way to supplement a diet plan is to incorporate natural herbs and spices that suppress appetite.

Garlic acts as an appetite suppressant by sending signals to the brain that the stomach is full. It also increases the body's metabolism when it releases the adrenalin hormone. By incorporating this spice into your diet, you'll not only feel fuller faster, but you'll burn more calories. In addition to helping maintain weight, garlic is known to decrease blood pressure, clear plaque that forms in arteries, stabilise blood sugar levels and power your immune system's defence against allergens. Because it is such a versatile spice, you can assimilate it into a variety of dishes like chicken, fish, salad dressings and sautéed vegetables. If you're not much of a cook, you can take garlic supplements as well.

Chiles not only add a touch of spice to your food, but they also decrease your hunger by encouraging you to drink more water. Chiles are cheap and easy to grow and are low in fat, which is why they're such a great supplement to any diet. The secret is an element called capsaicin, which is made up of vitamin C, vitamin A and beta carotene. These three substances enable digestion, which causes appetite suppression. Of course, this particular spice is commonly found in Mexican food and Italian dishes. You can also add dried red pepper flakes to salads for an extra kick.

Though cinnamon is popular addition to fatty foods like rolls and bread, in its natural state, it is an extremely beneficial spice that controls hunger. It also helps lower cholesterol, increase energy and improve the health of arteries. It can be easily incorporated into any diet when used in place of sugar. For example, sprinkle a teaspoon on your cereal or oatmeal in the morning. Or simply add a dash to your afternoon coffee.

Green Tea

Green tea is cheap, easy to find in any store and a fantastic alternative to coffee. It contains an essential substance called polyphenol, which helps increase metabolism and naturally decrease hunger. Of course, green tea contains caffeine, so you must always regulate your intake and make sure you're not drinking too much at one time.
