According to the Minority Nurse website, the Philippines is a top source of foreign-trained nurses in the United States. Filipino nurses also work in many other parts of the world. Most of these nurses graduated from Philippine nursing schools. Although there is a rising popularity of distance learning schools in the Philippines, as of August 2010 only one university offered a nursing degree online. However, there are online schools managed by nursing colleges where related health care courses are offered.

University of the Philippines Manila

The University of the Philippines Manila (UPM), in collaboration with the University of the Philippines (UP) system's distance learning arm called the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU), offers the distance education for master of arts in nursing degree (DEMAND). This program allows qualified nurses both in the Philippines and abroad to study while practicing their profession.

The course is open for nurses coming from various fields of specialisation such as education, service, community health, administration, research and private practice. The program is designed for clinical specialisation and leadership in adult health nursing or maternal and child nursing. A graduate receives a master's degree from the country's state university, UP.

Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila

The Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) has non-traditional course offerings managed by the College of Nursing, in coordination with the Integrated Midwives Association of the Philippines (IMAP). PLM provides both the bachelor in community health services (BCHS) and the master in community health services (MCHS), designed to help midwives and other health professionals upgrade their competencies and let them qualify for higher posts in their organisations.

Addressing practical needs for professional advancements, these distance learning courses are offered on a trimester basis complete with learning modules and the aid of modern communication and information technology facilities. The BCHS is the first course offered by PLM's community-focused distance learning programs in 1995.

Other than nursing courses, similar health courses are offered by the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU). It features three non-formal courses and certificate programs in the health care field including: caring for the older person; community mental health; and caring for children with special needs.

Course delivery and materials for these 12-week courses include course guides, printed course modules, CDs, handouts, online discussion boards and related and selected readings. Although classes are primarily held online, there are times that students are required to attend face-to-face sessions at the UPOU and UP Manila (UPM) campuses.
