Microsoft’s SQL Server Management Studio, provided with Microsoft SQL Server, manages and configures SQL databases. SQL Server Management Studio is a popular choice for database management, but it’s not your only option. Both free and commercial SQL Server Management Studio alternatives exist to manage and administer SQL Server and other types of databases.

SQLyog

SQLyog, available from Webyog.com, is available in four editions: Ultimate, Enterprise, Professional and Community. SQLyog supports managing both SQL and MySQL databases. Users can manage queries, table relationships, database users, multiple database connections and many more SQL database aspects. SQLyog is also Excel friendly for exporting and importing data. SQLyog is commercial software, with the prices varying between versions. Ultimate and Enterprise offer the most features and are geared toward users managing large or multiple SQL databases.

SQLDbx

SQLDbx is a free alternative provided by SQLDbx.com for personal use only. Support is included for database servers from Microsoft, Oracle, IBM and Sybase ASE. Data can be imported and exported via Excel, CVS and XML. SQLDbx is a standalone application that does not install anything on the host computer. Manage, configure and edit SQL databases through a single graphical user interface window.

WinSQL

WinSQL, a free SQL Server Management Studio alternative, is intended only for personal use and is available from Synametrics.com. WinSQL supports the management of any relational database, including SQL Server. In addition to management tools, wizards are provided to help beginners or to quickly perform tasks. A commercial version is available as well which adds more advanced features for SQL developers.
