Celebrate the birthday of any football fan or add a sweet finish to your Super Bowl party with a homemade football field cake. Keep your own cake decorating skill level in mind when choosing a design for your football field cake. A simple cake with a little attention to detail will impress your guests and still leave you with enough time to enjoy the game.

Cake Pan

The rectangular shape of a football field simplifies the process of recreating the field in cake form. Bake your cake in a rectangle shaped pan large enough to accommodate the number of guests you need to serve. Wilton Industries advises that a 9-inch by 13-inch cake will provide 45 1.5-inch by 2-inch servings while a 12-inch by 18-inch sheet cake provides 72 servings of the same size.

Edible Turf

While the cake flavour used will not affect the finished appearance of your cake, the type of icings chosen is important to achieve a realistic looking football field cake. Ice the cake with a base coat of green icing which is easily made by adding a few drops of green food colouring to white icing. Cover the icing with green tinted coconut if you want to add more texture to the cake and simulate the appearance of real grass or synthetic turf. Coconut is tinted by shaking it in a sealed plastic bag with food colouring until uniform in colour.

Field Markings

Add detail to your iced cake by applying the lines and numbers commonly seen on real football fields. Refer to a picture of a football field while you work to avoid making mistakes that an observant fan of the sport will notice. If you have some experience piping icing onto cakes, you can apply frosting tinted to the appropriate colours directly to the football field cake with an icing bag and decorating tips. Cake decorating novices may have difficulty with this technique but, fortunately, it is not your only option. Instead of using icing, cut the markings from pieces of taffy rolled flat with a rolling pin and press them gently onto the frosted cake.

You may be able to find cake topper sets consisting of several football players and two goalposts in craft stores or cake decorating supply shops. Don't fret if you cannot locate one of these sets. Your football field cake will still be impressive without tiny plastic football players and you can make your own homemade and edible goalposts. Look for a product called candy coating to make your goalposts. This product melts quickly in your microwave and hardens at room temperature. Draw a goalpost onto paper and place a piece of waxed paper over your drawing. Pipe the melted candy coating from a pastry bag or a resealable plastic bag with a snipped corner to fill in the goalpost outline. Repeat the process using the same drawing to create two identical goalposts for your cake. Once the goalposts are cool and hard, you can peel them away from the waxed paper and gently insert them into your football field cake.
