An 18th birthday is a milestone occasion as it marks the moment a minor officially becomes an adult. The honoree celebrates with friends and/or family, and from the comfort of home, a restaurant or a banquet hall. As with most birthday parties, the cake decoration may tie in with the party's selected theme or setting.

Tropical Birthday Cakes

An 18th birthday party with a luau or pool party theme may include a variety of tropical-themed birthday cakes. For instance, a coconut cake looks particularly festive amid a setting filled with leis and tiki torches. Although it makes for a slightly non-traditional birthday cake, an upside down pineapple cake fits in with such an environment as well. Asian-owned bakeries often sell cakes topped with tropical fruit, including mango and kiwi. An 18th birthday party set in an elegant garden may also feature a cake decorated with fresh flowers.

Feminine and Elegant Cakes

Although 18-year-olds are considered legal adults, some women still opt for a decidedly girlie 18th birthday celebration. In particular, fashionistas can ring in their birthday with specially designed cakes in the shape of purses, dresses or shoes. Those searching for something a bit more sophisticated may settle on a chic party atmosphere complete with mocktails, women in cocktail dresses, men in suits and a designer cake dripping with elaborate costume jewellery. Most speciality cake shops can fulfil such requests.

School-Themed Cakes

Many 18-year-olds may be university bound or recently enrolled in college for the first time. In such instances their 18th birthday cake may come topped with their new school's colours or images associated with the university, such as a famous building or a mascot. For 18-year-olds still in high school, a cake may celebrate their high school career, such as a football or cheerleading-themed cake. The celebration can also double as a graduation party, depending on the time of year. Parents may order a cake decorated with a childhood photo, marking their child's ascent into adulthood.
