Graduates of sports management programs include university athletic administrators, coaches, sports agents and professional sports employees. The best programs in the country give students the opportunity to gain real-world experience, employ faculty who have real-life experience and offer extensive career resources for students. The rankings of sports management programs in sports and business publications are generally uniform in identifying the best schools.

University of Massachusetts, Amherst

The Isenberg School of Management at UMass-Amherst has a highly regarded sport management program. Sports writer John Helyer gave it top marks in the Wall Street Journal and ESPN the Magazine in 2006. Founded in 1971, it is the second oldest sport management program in the country. Undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students study in the department. Undergraduates must apply for admission into the department. Gaining admittance to the university is not a guarantee of acceptance into the sport management program. Undergraduates are encouraged to complete a semester-long internship in a sport organisation. In addition to a traditional master of science degree, graduate students can combine their studies with business classes and earn a joint M.S./master of business administration. Ph.D. students participate in an ongoing research seminar series with guest speakers from around the world.

Ohio University

Ohio University's Department of Sports Administration is the oldest sports management program in the nation. Founded in 1966 by baseball legend Walter O'Malley, the school grants degrees to undergraduate and graduate students. The undergraduate program is one of the most popular departments on campus. Graduates have three study options: a standalone master of sports administration (MSA), a joint master of business administration/MSA or a juris doctor/MSA dual degree. The school also has a program for high school students with the Sports Business Academy, a weeklong program for teenagers. It exposes them to the field with classes taught by university professors and lectures from industry leaders, including NBA and MLB executives.
