A perennial plant is one that lasts from one year to the next without having to be replanted. You can easily start perennials from divisions, seeds or cuttings. Perennials in a hanging basket can go for up to two years before they will need to be repotted. Division is the easiest way of maintaining a perennial in a hanging basket. To divide a perennial, remove the plant from the container, and cut or tear the root mass. Replant the perennial in a container with a soil mixture high in organic matter. Perennials are valued not only for their long lasting growth but also for their flower colours and foliage. To keep the perennials healthy from one season to the next, always bring them in before a hard freeze. This will prevent the root-ball from freezing and killing the plant.
