Beach interior design ideas

Designing an interior with the beach in mind is the perfect idea for the home owner who values relaxation and serenity. Beach designs centre on the experience of peering out over the sand and water on a beautiful, sunny day. You'll find the same textures that you would feel when walking down the boardwalk. You also get a sense of the same hospitable atmosphere found at the neighbourhood seafood restaurant.

Colors and Textures

Colors and textures in beach design are pulled directly from the outdoors. They reflect the ocean, the sky, the sun and the sand. For interior walls, choose a pale blue that will mimic the appearance of the summer sky. Use yellow accents throughout your room to brighten the space just as the sun brightens up the shore. Choose various shades of blue in furniture to pull in the colours of the ocean, and use beige, brown and taupe in floor colours and accessories to mirror a sandy beach. Add texture by using tweed furniture as opposed to something overly soft, and display seashells in a glass vase or as art on the walls.

Furniture

There is no need for anything fancy when it comes to beach design. The main idea is to create a casual, comfortable, liveable space without going overboard. Furniture should be minimal in the living room but should also serve dual purposes. Consider purchasing a sleeper sofa so that you can pull it out for extra overnight guests. Buy an oversized dining room table with bench-style seating that you can use inside on a rainy day or carry outside for a summer picnic.

Accessorise

Accessories are what makes beach design so unique. Nowhere else will you find fishing nets, lighthouses and captain's wheels hanging on the walls. Use any sort of nautical elements that remind you and your family of time spent at the beach as accessories in interior beach design. Seashells are, of course, one of the most common accessories in beach-themed interiors. Consider drilling holes in them and threading them onto a piece of rope to hang from the ceiling. Drape nets from ceiling corners and tack on a fishing lure here and there.
