A school hall monitor is the American equivalent of a prefect. Students who fill this role are expected to act with decorum and be conscientious of the school regulations. School hall monitors are intended to be akin to staff members in their enforcement of school rules. As a school hall monitor, a student is expected to act with maturity and work to preserve the school building and ensure that pupils conduct themselves in an orderly and appropriate fashion.

Monitor set area

School hall monitors are generally assigned a set area to monitor. During duty time, school hall monitors ensure students have a hall pass to be outside of class, maintain good conduct in halls and that no mischief is going on. Often, school hall monitors are held responsible for rule-violating behaviour that occurs within their set area, so they must ensure that they watch carefully and successfully thwart any attempts and misdeeds.

Enforce dress code

School hall monitors must ask students to modify their attire if they are out of dress code, or give them a dress code violation if the attire cannot be satisfactorily modified. Because they are to enforce dress code, school hall monitors must also strictly adhere to the dress code themselves, so other students follow their lead.

Protect school property

While patrolling their set areas, school hall monitors must ensure that no damage is done to school property. Preventing this damage is important because damaged school equipment can be costly to repair.

Report any violators

School hall monitors must inform school administration of any rule-violations they witness. Commonly, school hall monitors are given a book or referral forms to use for the recording of rule violations. While they do not hand down punishments themselves, punishments are commonly dispensed as a result of reports.

Act as student leaders

School hall monitors are intended to be role models to other students. In addition to acting as leaders of the general student body, some school hall monitors receive their opportunity to take a leadership role within the school hall monitoring system.
