If you're single, over the age of 50, and have a sense of wanderlust, join the crowd. Plenty of travel and cruise companies now offer trips for mid-life, single travellers, catering to those who crave adventure, history, culture and simply a chance to get away and mingle with people their own age. Here's a look at several companies who offer cruises for the over-50 crowd.

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines

This family-owned British company, which has been around for five generations, caters to over-50 passengers and is one of the few companies that has designed many of its cabins for individuals travelling alone. Both of the company's ships, the Balmoral and the Braemar, were recently reconfigured with 50 staterooms for single travellers. This cruise company also has "dance hosts" on hand to offer single travellers a dance partner in the evenings. Fred Olsen offers cruises throughout Europe, a cruise along the California coast, trips to the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, and even a cruise to the Amazon.

Singles Travel International

Singles Travel International offers both land and water trips specifically for singles and categorised by age group. The company's website uses convenient symbols that represent the age groups for each tour or cruise, helping anyone who might initially be reluctant to book. Singles Travel offers a long list of cruise vacations for travellers ages 30-plus through 50-plus. Among them is a seven-night Alaska Cruise Adventure on the Celebrity Mercury cruise ship, which features two swimming pools, four whirlpools, a fitness centre, the Fortunes Casino and the Celebrity Theatre. Also offered is a seven-night Jazz and Wine Lovers Cruise of the Saone and Rhone Rivers in Paris and Nice, with guided sightseeing of those regions and admission to the Vienna Jazz Festival. Another option is a Greek Island "fantasy cruise," which takes you from Venice, Italy, aboard Royal Caribbean's Splendour of the Seas to ports in Croatia, Corfu, Athens and Mykonos, Greece. Singles Travel offers its passengers optional "singles tours" in each port on the trip, plus activities such as dance lessons, wine tastings, cooking lessons and oldies dance parties.

This 41-year-old Canadian travel company specialises in singles cruises and tours to spots around the world. Singles Travel works with major cruise lines to fill ships and pairs single travellers with same-sex roommates so that they don't have to pay a single-supplement fee.
