Easy Mosaic Tile Projects for Kids

Updated February 21, 2017

Mosaic is an ancient form of artwork used to decorate floors, walls, tables and tiles. The ancient Greeks, Romans and Byzantines were famous for their mosaic work, which involves sticking small tile fragments into an adhesive surface and forming a design. Kids can make mosaics, but its best to start them off covering flat items with small surfaces, until they get the hang of working with tile.

Picture Frame

The edge of a picture frame is an easy mosaic tile project for kids. Friends or family will appreciate a handmade mosaic picture frame as a special gift. A metal base frame is best for use with mosaic work, and any design the child wants can embellish the edge of the frame.

Making simple drink coasters is a first mosaic project kids can complete without losing patience with the process. They can make multiple coasters, practicing different designs on each. Making coasters is also something practical, and kids can feel proud when mum or dad bring out their handmade coasters when guests come over.

Children can make an ordinary dish special by making a mosaic on the surface. This is an especially pertinent activity if a child has recently broken a plate or bowl: choose some small, not-too-sharp pieces of the broken item and get them to incorporate them into the mosaic design as a way of recycling the broken item.

Jewellery Box

The lid of a jewellery box is perfectly suited for mosaic embellishment. Pieces of shiny or glittery tile are especially apt for use with a jewellery box mosaic, and designs can include different pieces of jewellery so anyone looking at the box knows what's inside.

Wall Hanging

Wall hangings provide the opportunity for kids to make a picture-like mosaic for hanging on their bedroom wall, or as a gift to someone. A wooden board is a suitable base. Mosaic wall hangings can include underwater themes, animal themes, pictures of flowers, trees and bird. Give your child a sheet of graph paper and crayons in the colours of your tiles and let their imagination run free designing the mosaic wall hanging before getting to work with tiles and grout.
