Seaside decorating ideas
You don't have to live near the ocean to enjoy seaside decorating. (View of the beach of Caesarea. Old buildings on the beach image by L. Shat from Fotolia.com)

You don't have to own a beach house to enjoy interior decorating with a seaside theme. You can bring the ocean to any indoor location with a combination of earthy colours, natural materials and casual designs. The theme offers a wide variety of hues, not just blue and brown. Coral pink, seaweed green, cloud white and stormy grey are just as "nautical" as water blue and sand brown.

Blue Background Bookshelf

Turn a simple bookshelf into a seaside decoration with some paint and nautical accents. Water blue paint covers the back wall of the white shelf for a clean silhouette with a hint of ocean style. Assorted books, photographs, seashells and miniature boats can decorate the shelves. The bookshelf looks good--from bedroom to dining room.

Driftwood Wall Hanging

Bring a seaside theme to any room with a decorative wall hanging created from driftwood. Large pieces of driftwood cover each side of a plain, rectangular picture frame to provide an uneven and natural silhouette. Glossy dark blue paper covered with a fisherman's net provides a nautical background for the framed picture. Colourful thin seashells randomly cover the netted background to provide an artistic design.

Fishing Net Canopy Bed

Combine classic fisherman's nets, starfish and linens to create a canopy bed with a romantic seaside style. A large rope net hangs from the top of the wall and cascades down to the floor. Another net hangs from the ceiling, intertwining with the first net, and falls a few feet from the ceiling on each side to create a canopy silhouette. Large starfish hang from the netting in a random pattern for a natural appearance.

Off-white linens and a seashell-patterned blanket in coral and tan cover the bed for a subtle accent. Off-white seashell- and starfish-shaped pillows decorate the bed for a touch of whimsy. Dark wood floors and light blue walls help make the canopy decoration stand out and become the focal point of the room.

Ocean Kitchen Counters

Weathered wood and seaside accents combine to create kitchen counters with a casual seaside style. Broken light blue and blue ceramic tiles cover the weathered white wood cabinets for a watery theme. Tiny, rectangular, fish-painted tiles trim the top of the matching broken tile backsplash for a hint of colour. Matching ceramic fish knobs on the cabinet doors and drawers add a humorous touch. Pair the counters with weathered natural wood floors, light coloured walls and appliances in white, yellow or cream.

Striped Slipcover Seating

Give your living room a quick seaside makeover with blue and cream striped linen slipcovers. The slipcovers give couches, loveseats and armchairs a fresh and casual beach appearance. Sandy brown, light blue, seaweed green and ruby red pillows add a splash of colour and some contrast to the design. A matching blue rug, light wood tables and glass bowls filled with colourful seashells help tie the room together.
