Space is a favourite theme with many kids. (moon image by Augenblicke from

Blast off to a successful birthday party with space theme decor and treats that any young space lover will appreciate at his celebration. Incorporating the space theme throughout all of the party details creates a unified, all-encompassing experience for the kids. A space-themed cake makes an ideal end to the party, and many space cake creations are simple enough to do at home. You can also share these ideas with your favourite bakery if you prefer to order a customised party cake.

Rocket Cake

A rocket cake is a natural choice for a space-themed party. You can easily turn a sheet cake into a rocket by cutting it to a point at one end. Gradually curve your cuts on both sides down to one end to create the rocket shape. Use the cut pieces to create fins at the bottom of the rocket. Add a layer of icing and some detail work to complete the look of a rocket. Place the candles at the end of the cake so the flames look like the rocket is blasting off.

Moon Cake

A speciality pan shaped like a ball that comes in two halves makes it easy to create a moon cake. After you have baked both halves of the cake and removed them from their pan sections, use a layer of icing to hold them together. Cover the cake with grey icing (mix black food dye into white frosting) to give it more of a moon look. Add a few craters in the moon by pressing the back of an ice cream scoop gently into the icing. A miniature American flag and astronaut figure on top of the cake add the finishing touches.

Solar System Cake

The same spherical pan you would use to create a moon cake works for creating a replica of the solar system. Add smaller ball pans to the process to make some of the planets smaller and create a more realistic scale for your cake replica of the solar system. Another option is to bake a large sheet cake and place planets shaped out of fondant on top of it. Fondant is available at craft stores in the cake decorating section. It is similar in texture to play dough, making it easy to work with and create the planet shapes. You can also tint the fondant to the appropriate planetary colours. Candy sprinkles spread over the cake represent the stars.

Alien Cake

For a lighthearted twist on the space theme, make the cake look like an alien. One simple idea is to cut a sheet cake into the shape of an alien. You can also draw an alien on top of a sheet cake using icing. Make the alien funny, friendly or scary to match the theme of the party. You can also turn cupcakes into aliens. The round tops of the cupcakes create the alien faces. Use candies and fondant shapes to create the facial details of the alien cupcakes.
