The Walkman took the 1980s by storm, representing the revolutionary beginnings of portable, personal audio. The advent of the CD player dethroned the popular cassette player in the 1990s, ushering in a new era of musical clarity and style. In the early 2000s, the MP3 player arrived on the scene to the joy of audiophiles everywhere.

The first MP3 players were the size of a deck of cards. Over the last several years, these small musical wonders have shrunk to the size of a match box. Much smaller than their cassette-playing ancestors, MP3 players are also accessorised with arm bands, making MP3 portability a hands-free option. There is also no need to cart around a box of tapes or sleeves of compacts discs -- the music is all electronically formatted.

Playback Mechanics

Most MP3 players use a flash drive to play music. This technology eliminates any moving parts, making the music skip-free in the most bumpy situations. Owners add their music using a computer and a connection cord after purchasing from online outlets, such as iTunes, Amazon and the Walmart website. Music can also be added to these devices from electronic copies of previously owned CDs.

Some MP3 players use a disk-drive for playback, which does have the potential to cause skipping. However, disk-drive models can pack much more music onto the device, making this particular style appealing for audiophiles with loads of music and a smooth ride.

The nature of the electronic media allows owners to customise their playlists. Instead of listening to music in a predetermined order, owners can place the songs in any order they would like using computer software. Some MP3 players feature on-the-go playlist creation capabilities that don't require a computer, allowing the owner to create a playlist anywhere at anytime. MP3 players also come in different colours and sizes, allowing each consumer to find the perfect player for his needs that simultaneously fits his style.
