Monkeys are popular animals with 1-year-old children, making them a fitting theme for the first birthday party. A monkey cake is a way to finish off a monkey-themed first birthday party. Whether you make the cake yourself or order it from a bakery, there are many ways to incorporate monkeys and the number one into the cake design.

Wooden Block Replica

Square cakes stacked into a cube create the base for the wooden block cake. Spread a layer of icing between each square cake to hold them together. Ice the cake in a light background colour. Place an image on each visible side of the cube. One of the sides should be a monkey and another should be the number one. You can alternate the monkey and number one on all of the sides or add other shapes and letters. Fondant works well for creating the shapes. Fondant is an edible material that resembles play dough. You can roll it out and use a fondant cutter to cut it into the desired shapes. Place a monkey and number one template on top of the fondant and cut around it. Press the fondant shapes into the icing, which will hold it in place. You can also cut narrow strips of fondant to create a border around each side of the block cake.

Number One Cake

The cake in this decorating idea is shaped like the number one. You can purchase a speciality cake pan shaped like the number one. The other option is to cut a sheet cake into the number one shape. Ice the cake in a colour that complements the party decor. Add little monkey figures around the number one. You can shape your own monkeys from fondant. Work with it as you would play dough or clay. You can also purchase plastic monkey figures. You can place the monkeys on top of the cake or beside it.

Monkey Head

A dome-shaped cake is used to create the head of the monkey for this cake idea. You can also bake the cake in a Pyrex bowl that is oven-safe. Ice the cake in brown frosting after it is cool. Bake one cupcake to create the ears. Cut the cupcake in half and press each half onto the side of the iced cake with wooden skewers. Ice the ears. Add an oval of lighter brown frosting to create the nose and mouth area of the monkey. Use black icing to add the eyes, nose and mouth. Put the extra dark brown frosting in a pastry back with a star tip. Pipe the number one on top of the monkey to make it look like the fur on the top of his head. Another option is to cut the number one out of fondant. Let it harden for a few days. Stand it upright into the top of the monkey's head.

Monkey Cupcakes

Cupcakes offer an alternative option for the party. They are easier to serve and work well for a first birthday party. Decorate each cupcake to look like a monkey's face. Cover it with brown icing. Use white icing to make the eyes with a round, black piece of candy in the middle. Add a mouth with pink or red frosting. Shape ears out of brown fondant and press them into the icing near the top of each cupcake. Place the monkey cupcakes on a serving tray in the shape of a number one.
