Wings of Glory

"Wings of Glory" is a free online game created by Crazy Monkey Games. The object is to complete a series of missions assigned by headquarters that involves flying a fighter plane. The missions begin with protecting an airfield full of grounded planes and advances through several types of raids and attacks, as well as challenging dogfights.

The controls are fairly easy to learn, but can be tricky in combat. The arrow keys steer the plane as well as make it loop and roll as needed for evasive action. The spacebar shoots the machine guns and the shift key drops bombs. For a simple online game, this one actually requires the player to focus his attention to succeed.

Blazing Angels

UBISOFT's "Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII" was released in 2006 and 2007 for play on the Nintendo Wii, PC, Xbox and PlayStation consoles. The flight combat simulator features 46 different fighter planes from several countries used during the war.

As part of the fictitious Eagle Squadron, players fly 18 real missions from the war, including the defence of London from the Luftwaffe bombing during the Battle of Britain and the Battle of Midway in the Pacific Theater.

Handling of the various aircraft are unique to the model, making getting used to a plane nearly impossible without repeating missions over and over. This keeps the game challenging and makes for an enduring interest in flying the missions. The Wii controller tends to fit the game best out of all the consoles, while PC play can be enhanced using a joystick.

"Luftwaffe" is a turn-based strategy board game from the Avalon Hill Company. This is a somewhat complicated game for serious strategy gamers interested in the European theatre during WWII. Players can choose to compete as the U.S. or German commander. Using a scenario booklet, dice and numerous player counters, the players compete to end the war in their favour.

The U.S. commander tries to eliminate German industrial complexes using air raids, thereby cutting the German commander's capability to continue the fight. The German commander has an entire arsenal of German aircraft at his fingertips to fend off attacks from the Allied forces.
