A garage doesn’t have to be just for parking the car and organising the tools. Garages can be converted to meet a homeowner’s needs in a number of ways. This additional space can be completely redesigned to become usable living space or even a separate living area for another resident. With some initial investment in materials and a bit of imagination, there is no limit to how one can transform a garage and make an improvement on the existing home.

Family Room

Converting the garage into a family room is a way to add a casual place to relax and spend time with your spouse or children without disturbing the more visible parts of the home. Most houses have a designated living room, but some people may prefer to use that area primarily for entertaining guests.

The garage can become a family room that those living outside the house rarely see. Adding tile to the existing concrete floor and moving in a mini-fridge and a large, comfortable sectional couch can turn this into a useful room that will quickly become a favourite spot in the home to hang out.

Fitness Room

Converting the garage into your own fitness centre will encourage health and well-being. Many people are not comfortable going to the gym. Putting on the sweatsuit and sweating off the pounds is certainly good for you, but some people are discouraged by the idea of being on display to the general public.

A garage can be converted to a home gym easily by purchasing a treadmill, stationary bike, free weights and other fitness equipment, and placing them neatly on the floor. Reconfiguring the design of the garage may not be necessary, and flooring could be left alone. For some added comfort on the floor, inexpensive indoor/outdoor carpet may be the answer. The design can be as simple or elaborate as the homeowner chooses. The design could even include a sound system and big-screen television as distractions during the workout routine.

Some homeowners choose to convert their garages into self-contained apartments. This may be a good move if a relative is going to move in or if you wish to supplement your income by creating a rentable apartment.

This project can take considerable time and expense. In most cases, a self-contained apartment will need plumbing, a private entrance and added walls. Even the simplest design will include a finished floor and walls, including the opening where the garage door is, as well as partitions to allow privacy in the bathroom.

A garage can become the children’s play place with the installation of tile or carpeting. The playroom can be stocked with the children’s toys, a stereo system, video game system, a television and more. This separate playroom will discourage the cluttering of children’s bedrooms and will keep toys from being strewn all over the house. Most importantly, it gives kids a place to have fun anytime, even when the weather or other factors prevent outdoor activities.
