Canned fizzy drinks are not the only beverages that are full of high-fructose corn syrup. It is found in commercially prepared eggnog, commercially packaged lemonades and sweet tea, chocolate-flavoured milk and some juice boxes that school-age children are so fond of.

Granola, energy and breakfast bars are typically high in fibre and considered healthy for you, but the addition of high-fructose corn syrup can offset this benefit. The addition of the fructose enhances the flavour of the fruits, balances the spices, provides a soft texture and keeps the product fresh longer in its packaging.

Spaghetti sauces

High-fructose corn syrup may seem unlikely in savoury spaghetti sauces but it is necessary to balance the spices and to keep them from being too acidic or bitter from the tomato products.


The high-fructose corn syrup balances the tangy taste in condiments such as ketchup. In recipes just a touch of sugar is needed to enhance certain spices and this is why it is necessary in condiments such as salad dressing, bottled marinades and barbecue sauces.

Breakfast cereals

High-fructose corn syrup is common in many brands of cereal, particularly those aimed at children. Even the healthier cereals could be packed full of this sweetener. Always read labels to see how much the product contains.

Baked goods

High-fructose corn syrup gives that golden-brown colour to breads and bakery goods, enhances the flavour of fruits found in the breads and desserts and prevents sugar crystallisation for a soft texture.
