Choosing the perfect gift for your gay male friend doesn't mean flowers, tank tops and Broadway show tickets (although they may like that). Think about the person and his interests and find a present that suits them. Consider his profession and hobbies in choosing the right gift. In the summer of 2011, New York state began allowing gays and lesbians to marry their partners, a measure cheered by thousands of gay men in New York City. Whether you are purchasing a gift for a birthday, anniversary or to celebrate nuptials, here are some suggestions on buying that great present for a gay man in New York.

Gay Paraphernalia

For the out gay man or couple consider buying some gay paraphernalia. This includes anything with the rainbow flag on it or double men's symbols. Another popular symbol is the lambda symbol which has been used for four decades as a symbol of the struggle for legal rights for gays and lesbians. In many gay stores you can find these etched onto watches or glasses, printed on T-shirts and other clothing, or as buttons, magnets and flags.

New York City Gay Men's Chorus

The New York City Gay Men's Chorus is an all-male, all-gay group of singers that have been performing for over thirty years. The NYCGMC has two major events each year. For summer weddings, consider tickets to the annual Sea Tea benefit. Sail aboard the Queen of Hearts for a two and half hour cruise around the New York Harbor. Tickets include buffet dinner, entertainment and a DJ. For winter birthdays or a pre-Christmas gift, buy a ticket to the NYCGMC's Holiday Spectacular.

Chokerz 4 Men

ChoKerZ 4 Men specialises in high quality jewellery that would appeal to the modern, gay man in New York City. As businesses began to allow more casual work wear, and the tie became less necessary to the office, the founders of the company realised that men may still want to wear an adornment. They now provide necklaces of various types and styles including lariats, chokers, plain chain and pendant necklaces, as well as anklets and bracelets.

Restaurant Gift Token

There are many diverse restaurants in New York City. Find out the type of food your friend or family member likes and choose a restaurant that suits your budget. This makes a great gift for the newly married gay couple. Online travel sites such as Fun Maps allow you to filter restaurants by "gay owned/operated," "gay scene" and "gay-friendly."

Gay and Lesbian Anti-Defamation League

The Gay and Lesbian Anti-Defamation League was formed in New York City in 1985 to pressure the New York Post to change their sensationalistic journalism about the AIDS crisis. Within two years they had encouraged the New York Times to change the way they covered gay issues. They continue to follow media carefully serving as "storyteller, watchdog and advocate" and "holding the media accountable for the words and images they present." If you're looking for a present for a gay man concerned about media rights you could make a donation to GLAAD or buy him some GLAAD swag. Their online store sells a range of clothing with various logos; there are even shirts for dogs.

Gay Men's Health Crisis formed in 1981 in response to the outbreak of what is known now as HIV/AIDS. Their mission today is the same as it was then: "GMHC fights to end the AIDS epidemic and uplift the lives of all affected." A significant number of men in New York City over the age of 30 will have lost many friends to the AIDs epidemic. A donation to GMHC is a gift that helps protect the future generations and provides services to those affected and infected by HIV and AIDS.
