Charm Squares Project
Charm packs offer a lot of fabrics for a small price. (Hemera Technologies/ Images)

A charm pack consists of 42 squares of fabric, each cut to 5 inches. There are typically five to 10 different fabric designs within a charm pack. The fabrics generally come from the same fabric line, so the colours and designs all go well together. They are often used in quilts because they are a good pre-cut size. You can also use them for many other craft projects.

Charm squares help make quilts a little easier to plan and put together. You can make a basic square quilt using the 5-inch squares. With a 1/4-inch seam allowance, the finished squares will be 4 1/2 inches. With 42 squares in a charm pack, that is a good sized quilt, depending on the layout you do. You can even cut the squares in half diagonally, making 84 triangles. If you add more fabric, you can make an even larger quilt.

Table Runner

A table runner is made similarly to a quilt, only much smaller. A table runner lays down the middle of the dining room table lengthwise; it generally falls a few inches down each end of the table. Use a holiday charm pack to make a special piece. You may be able to get more than one runner out of a charm pack, depending on the length and width of the runner you make.

Create smaller quilted pillows from your charm pack. You can simply use the squares as they are, or dress them up in a stained glass window style. Like the table runner, you can make more than one pillow from the same charm pack. Dress up your living room couch with a brightly coloured charm pack.

Patchwork Beach Bag

Make a large beach bag or grocery tote from the charm pack. Sew the squares together for a patchwork look, then cut the pattern pieces from the large piece of patched work. You can quilt the fabric if you like, or simply leave it thin for a lightweight bag.

Vase Wraps

Dress up plain cylindrical vases with wraps made from charm squares. You can switch out the wraps to change the theme or decor of the vase. Purchase different charm packs for different holidays or seasons to easily change the look of a plain vase. Sew the charm squares together until the strip is long enough to wrap around the vase. Use ribbon or buttons and loops to attach the wrap to the vase.

Charm Square Skirt

Make a cute skirt for the little girl in your life out of charm squares. You need at least 36 squares for a small skirt; you can use the entire charm pack if you want a fuller skirt. Sew the squares together into three strips; this skirt is tiered. The bottom tier will have more squares than the top tier. The tiers are gathered to fit each other and a length of elastic is slipped through a casing in the top tier.

Purchase inexpensive plain dish towels to make this craft. You only need for four or five charm squares for this project. Cut 4- or 5-inches off one end of the towel. Sew the charm squares together so the length is the same width as the towel. Sew the charm square strip to the cut end of the towel. Sew the 4 inches of towel you had cut off to the other side of the charm square strip. Make several towels from the same charm pack. You can keep them or give them away as gifts.
