Because most Halloween costumes are inappropriate for daily use and made of low-quality materials, they offer minimal value. If you want to save money and decrease your impact on the environment without forgoing the fun of dressing up, turn an ordinary black dress into a home-made Halloween costume.

Pop culture interpretations of witches vary from benevolent, pretty young witches to evil, old hags full of warts and crooked noses. Whatever their nature and appearance, a witch almost always wears a black dress. The classic witch costume consists of a long black dress with long sleeves. Often, a witch wears a tall hat with a pointed tip and a round bring, displays long hair and carries a broomstick. Deck out a witch costume by carrying around the household broom. Other accessories include purple, black or striped tights and brightly coloured or dark jewellery.

Typically, a simple cat costume consists of a black leotard and tights or a long-sleeved black shirt and long black trousers. However, a tight black dress converts to a cat costume with the addition of cat ears and a cat's tail. Typically, cat ears consist of a black headband with two triangles on top. A tail consists of a long, thick piece of thread or fabric and attaches to a dress with a safety pin. You can find cat costume accessories at costume shops and party supply stores. You can create a cat headband or tail with black fabric and glue.

Holly Golightly

The main character of the film Breakfast at Tiffany's, Holly Golightly -- portrayed by style icon Audrey Hepburn -- popularised the little black dress. The Holly Golightly costume best matches a classy, formal black dress with no sleeves and a high neckline. To turn a simple black dress into a Holly Golightly costume, add a thick pearl necklace, oversized sunglasses and long, white gloves. If possible, wear your hair in a stylish bun or up-do.

Dark fairy

A dark fairy costume matches most black dresses but pairs especially well with a feminine or frilly dress. A fairy costume typically consists of a short dress, flat shoes and fairy wings. To create fairy wings, cut a butterfly wing shape out of cardboard and glue the wings to the back of your dress. If possible, pair your dress with shop-bought wings. Shop-bought wings attach to your shoulders and don't require the permanent alteration of a dress. Possible dark fairy costume accessories include wands, choker-style necklaces and patterned or fishnet tights.

Pop star

Because pop stars wear a wide variety of different costumes, many styles of black dress match the costume of a pop idol. Typically, female singers wear skin-tight dresses with low-cut necklines and short skirts. However, there is no standard. Pair a club-style black dress with high-heeled shoes, bright jewellery and a blonde wig to create a pop-star costume. To add extra authenticity to the costume, carry a microphone or wear a microphone headset.
