People's bodies come in varying shapes and sizes. However, they can be classified into four main body types, and each type has different clothes that look flattering on it. Although there's a temptation to buy the latest trends and fashions, before doing so you should make sure they will suit your body type. Choosing the most flattering clothes for you will help you look better and feel happier about your appearance.

Pear-Shaped

Women with a pear-shaped figure have narrow shoulders, small busts and large hips and thighs. If you have a pear-shaped body type, wear bright or patterned tops, puff-sleeved tops or tops with wide-set straps. Tops with low necklines and halter tops will also suit your figure. Dresses or skirts with A-line or flared bottoms will flatter your body type, by bringing attention away from the larger lower half. If wearing jeans or trousers, wear either a wide-legged or straight-legged cut in a dark colour.

Apple-Shaped

An apple-shaped body type is full and round, with a large bust and waist, but slimmer hips and thighs. You can dress to give the illusion of having a more balanced figure by wearing wraparound tops or fitted, but not tight, V-neck T-shirts in dark, solid colours. Wear empire line tops or dresses to skirt your waist, or wear belted tops or dresses to give the appearance of having a more defined waistline. Short skirts and low rise jeans or trousers will suit your slim legs.

Hourglass

A woman with an hourglass body type has roughly symmetrical hips and shoulders and a waist that cinches in. The hourglass figure is the easiest to dress, as you don't have to create the illusion of balance. V-neck tops or dresses will accentuate your bust, and lengthen your upper body. Dark colours always look slimming. Pencil skirts show off the curve of your hips and tops or dresses with a cinched-in waist will highlight your defined waistline. Wear low- or mid-rise jeans or trousers.

Rectangular

The rectangular shape is often found on models. It's slim and athletic, with balanced shoulders and hips, but an undefined waist and a smaller-than-average bust. Wear tops with scooped necks, V-necks or wraparound tops with nipped-in waists, as this will give the illusion of having a curvier top half. Most skirt styles suit this body type, but pencil skirts, flared skirts and A-line skirts work particularly well. Try wearing jeans with large back pockets or faded thighs to make your legs appear more shapely.
