Hitachi's Travelstar 5K160, also known under a variety of part numbers beginning with HTS54161, is a notebook-oriented 2.5-inch hard drive. It features a 160 GB capacity based on two 80 GB platters, and a choice between PATA and SATA interfaces. Like many notebook drives, it balances performance with low power consumption and a high degree of ruggedness.

Although the HTS54161 part number can indicate either a 120 GB or 160 GB drive, the drive is designed to have a 160 GB capacity. It stores 512 bytes per sector and uses four data heads to read the data from two patters, rotating at 5400 revolutions per minute.

Hitachi ships HTS54161 drives with two different interfaces. Drives with a Parallel ATA interface support both Ultra DMA transfers at 100 MB per second and mode-4 PIO transfers at 16.6 MB per second. The HTS54161 drives also come with a Serial ATA, or SATA interface. These mechanisms support a transfer speed of 1.5 GB per second.

Powered by a 5 volt connection, Hitachi's HTS54161 hard drives require 5 watts for start-up or during peak conditions. Reading and writing require 1.8 watts of power, and they draw just 0.6 to 0.8 watts when in their idle modes. SATA drives require 0.05 watts more power in their idle modes.

Dimensions and Weight

Sized to fit a notebook computer, the HTS54161 is just 9.5 millimetres tall. It measures 70mm wide and 100mm deep. As expected for a mobile drive, it is also quite light, weighing just 102 grams.
