A jersey autographed by an NFL quarterback, a rare children's book and a used cell phone rank among the many items you can sell on auction website eBay. If you put an item on the auction block and it becomes damaged or broken, you will want to end the auction early. You may wonder if you can stop an eBay auction within 12 hours of its ending time. The answer depends on your circumstances.
12 Hours or More
If 12 hours or more remain in your auction, you can end it early without any restrictions. If your item already has bids, you can cancel them or sell the item to the highest bidder.
12 Hours Or Less, No Bids
If less than 12 hours are left in your auction, you can stop it prematurely as long as no one has bid on your item. If you have cancelled any bids placed on your merchandise, you won't be able to terminate the auction early.
12 Hours Or Less With Bids
When 12 hours or less remain in the auction and someone has a bid on an item, you can end the listing early if you are willing to sell the item to the highest bidder. If you set a reserve price for the item which has not been met, you cannot end the listing early if it received a bid.
If you can't end the auction early, eBay suggests contacting bidders and explaining why the item is no longer available. You can then ask them to retract their bids. If the listing ends before you hear back from the winning bidder, the two of you can use eBay's unpaid item procedures to terminate the transaction.
