Examples of strong independent women fill news headlines, often delivered by other strong independent women. More than just another stereotype, it is a personality type that defines women of confidence and power, able to make their own decisions and guide their own lives. Each of these women are different, unique in her own way. There are, however, signs to look for, either in yourself or in the women you meet.

Other People Are Reading

Decisive

A strong and independent woman does not need input from others to make her decisions. If asked about her likes or dislikes, she has an answer and even knows why she has those preferences. If she is asked something she does not expect, watch for her to take a moment, think about your question and then answer in her own way, uninfluenced by an expected reaction or the input of her friends.

Financial Independence

She is employed, or has some method of supporting herself beyond any reliance on family or relationships. Alternately, if she is an in-home mother, she has a plan to achieve independence should her circumstances change. Her job is important to her and it's obvious she has a passion for it, either a passion for the work itself or for the independence that it gives her.

Communication

Pay attention when she speaks and listen for clarity and understanding. She knows what she is talking about, but she also knows how to communicate it. With confidence comes a willingness to speak and the ability to share her ideas.

Educated

She has an education, either a substantial formal education or a personal drive to learn and understand her world. She reads frequently or talks about interests that require a certain insight into the world beyond her town.

Whole Person

Listen to her interests. She has varied and unique interests; things she enjoys that are different from others around her. She is not influenced by fads or cultural expectations, instead designing her own interests and ideas. Expect her to have experiences outside of the comfort zone. These includes places that she has visited, books she has read or movies she has seen, with which most people are unfamiliar.

Moniker

She does not call herself a strong and independent woman. She does not need a title to tell people who she is; her actions and ideas define the title.
