A beautifully decorated cake is sure to enhance any celebration. Tailoring the cake to the recipient or occasion makes it even more special and can be surprisingly easy to do. Coloured sugar paste, edible decorations, cake boards, ribbons, edible paper and food ink pens are all readily available online or at speciality retailers.

To create a basic decorated cake, brush the surface with melted apricot jam and cover it with ready-rolled sugar paste. Add edible decorations to the cake itself and any non-edible decorations to the cake board.

Cake Themes for Adults

For adult celebrations, sporting themes are always popular. Create a golf course on your cake by using green sugar paste, then add irregular patches of blue and brown to make water hazards and bunkers. Miniature golf clubs can be bought online or made from sugar paste. Stick decorations down with melted jam. Pet-themed cakes are also easy to create. Cover a cake in basic white icing and use a shaped cookie cutter to cut out miniature cats and dogs from brown or black icing. If your cake recipient has a hobby, this is also a good source of ideas. Planes and cars work well, or create a fashion cake with cut-outs of shoes and handbags.

Cake Themes for Children

Children's cakes are great fun to create and you can really let your imagination run wild. Animal-themed cakes are popular, as are cartoon characters and TV stars. Many online suppliers provide photographs of TV stars printed onto edible wafer paper which can be stuck to a plain, iced cake. Children's toys are also a good source of inspiration. To create a Barbie doll cake, bake a cake in a pudding basin and cut a hole in the middle. Place a doll into the hole up to the waist, and ice the cake in pink butter cream so it looks like a skirt.

Cake Themes for Special Occasions

For occasions, such as anniversaries, try tailoring the cake to the occasion. For example, the gift for a 20th wedding anniversary is platinum, so decorate the cake with a wreath of silver coloured flowers, or even paint the whole cake silver using edible silver gilding. A cake to present at a retirement party could follow a good luck theme of horseshoes. For a christening cake, cover a plain, white, iced cake with a circle of edible pink or blue wafer paper, then add a pair of baby shoes to the top.

Cake Themes for Seasonal Occasions

For Christmas cakes, try a snow man theme. Cover the cake in white frosting, and swirl it with a fork to make it look like snow. Model snowmen out of sugar paste or use ready-made figures. Make some sugar paste balls and pile them in the middle of the cake for snow balls. Another simple idea is to create an enchanted forest. Cover the cake in white frosting and create pine trees in various sizes by rolling green sugar paste into cones. Stick them to the cake using toothpicks. Cut out stars using a cookie cutter, and stick them onto the cake board. Paint the stars with edible, gold, food paint. For Easter-themed cakes, cover the cake in plain green sugar paste and add brightly coloured eggs, either foil-wrapped chocolate or made from sugar paste. Add toy rabbits to the cake board and sugar paste flowers.
