There are many products on the market these days designed to do all types of things for your hair, from strengthening it to adding lustre and moisture to dry, brittle hair. These types of products can often be quite expensive. Fortunately, there are many home remedies you can find in your own kitchen that can have the same effect as the more expensive items.

Olive Oil

Olive oil is a wonderful home remedy to battle dry, brittle hair and can usually be found right in your own cabinet. Just before you take a shower, pour 2 tbsp of olive oil directly onto your head and comb it through your dry hair. Tuck all of your hair under a shower cap, which will keep the oil directly on your hair during the shower without rinsing out. Take your shower as usual. The heat from the shower will help the olive oil to soak into the shaft of your hair. After approximately 10 minutes, remove the shower cap and wash and rinse your hair as usual, using a moisturising shampoo and conditioner.

Gelatin is often used as a home remedy for thickening hair. Simply add a package of gelatin to your regular shampoo and shake the bottle until it is completely dissolved. The gelatin works by coating each strand of hair. Shampoo your hair as usual and rinse well. For a more intense treatment, add a package of gelatin to 1/2 cup of warm water until it dissolves, and work this into your hair. Let it completely dry, then shampoo and rinse as usual.

Egg is another product you can find right in your own kitchen that can be used as a home remedy for thickening and conditioning hair. Eggs are rich in vitamins such as E and D and also proteins. This helps to provide protection for hair as well as strengthening it. Beat a raw egg in a small bowl, then massage it into your scalp. Use a comb to distribute the egg through the entire length of your hair. Leave on for approximately 15 minutes, then rinse with cool water so the egg will not cook in your hair. Shampoo as usual.

Honey is another simple and inexpensive treatment that can help with thin or lusterless hair. Honey is rich in nutrients, which will help provide strength to your hair as well as adding body. Since the product is so thick and sticky, it is easier to use honey in a squeeze bottle. Apply approximately 2 tbsp to your hair and massage it into your scalp and throughout all your hair. Pin your hair on top your head and leave it in place for 15 to 20 minutes. The sticky honey will easily rinse out in a hot shower. It is also important to note that over an extended period of time and use, honey will also add highlights to your hair.
