An engagement is special because it represents the vow between two people who love each other deeply to spend the rest of their life together. What could make this joyous occasion even more special is your homemade engagement card. People love homemade items; whether it's the bride and groom sending out the announcement to friends, or well wishers sending pleasant sentiments to the couple, homemade cards show you are thoughtful, caring and a little crafty. Consider your options before beginning to create your masterpiece.

Special Moment

Select the nicest or most memorable photo you have of the prospective bride and groom. Imagine a creative way to use this photo for engagement party invitations. For instance, for long-time lovers, print a large photo out -- such as one depicting the time the couple dressed as clowns for a child's birthday back when they were in high school -- and make a card out of the photo itself, writing a special message on the back that says, "Still clowning around!" and showing a "then" and "now" contrast. Depicting a special moment between the couple helps potential wedding guests share in the couple's love and prepare for the wedding when they will share in this next intimate moment.

Couple's Favorites

Find images of the engaged couple's favourite things. Maybe the couple has a favourite flower, food, movie or place. Play around with this idea and creatively find a way to show you know the couple well and understand their favourite things. For instance, if the couple's favourite place is Italy, design the engagement card with the backdrop of a piazza and include elements like clip art of a glass of wine on the inside where you announce the engagement party.

Wedding-Themed Cards

Create a card that portrays the theme of the wedding if that is known at the time of the engagement. If the wedding is centred on a tropical, colourful theme, go for bright coloured patterns and maybe some dried out flowers. Alternatively, depict a traditional black and white-themed wedding, creating a card using only those colours and an old photo or a collage of the couple.

Honeymoon Cards

Consider where the couple will go on their honeymoon or where they have spoken about going in the past. Style the card around this place. In doing so, you will be congratulating the couple on both their engagement and on their ability to go somewhere interesting for their honeymoon -- and perhaps amp up their anticipation to get to that romantic destination!
