Whether you're celebrating a named wedding anniversary or a general one, a homemade greeting card is a special way to mark the occasion. Use your imagination and creativity to make a card to present to your spouse, parents or family friends. They will be particularly touched by a homemade effort.

Named Anniversary Themes

A named anniversary is the perfect opportunity to create a card based on a theme. For example, for a silver anniversary you can glue silver-plated embellishments, silver sequins or silver glitter to the card. For a pearl anniversary, thread pearls onto a thin ribbon and then stick the ribbon onto the inside fold of the card so it hangs down. Represent aquamarine, coral, ruby, sapphire and emerald anniversaries by using card or paper of the appropriate colour to make the base of the greeting card.

Photo Cards

What better way to personalise a card than by using a photo of the happy couple? Choose a photo of the first date, wedding day, honeymoon or previous anniversaries to form the centrepiece of the card. If you have a copy of the pair's first photo together, go ahead and use it. A reminder of such a significant moment in the couple's relationship is specifically poignant. If the couple has offspring, you could also use a photo featuring one or more of the children.

Painted Cards

Paint a picture on a stock card, wait for it to dry, trim around the picture -- discarding excess card -- and glue it onto the front of a homemade, blank greeting card template. Not only does a good painting look elegant and timeless, it also shows you've put effort into making the card. Different types of paint you might use include watercolours, acrylics or oils. The image you paint could be of the couple's favourite flower, a building significant to the pair or a butterfly or bird native to where husband and wife live.

Scrapbook Cards

The longer a couple has been married, the more material you have to make a collage/scrapbook style card for that special anniversary. Creating a collage also does not require advanced craft skills. Collect paper-based items to do with the relationship, wedding and marriage, cut them up and glue them onto the exterior of the card template for a scrapbook effect. Items you could use include the wedding invite, wedding place cards, receipts from the couple's first date and photos.
