Shower caddies are a convenient way of storing frequently used bathroom items such as bottles of shampoo, soap, scrubs and shower gels. Depending on the type of bathroom layout you have and your preference on how you use these things, a shower caddie can help you make your bathroom more user-friendly and organised.

Plastic vs. Chrome

One of the main differences between shower caddies available in the market is the type of material used. Plastic shower caddies are more affordable and less prone to rusting, while chrome caddies are more stylish and slightly more expensive. For others, stainless steel caddies are preferred since they don't rust, even over extended periods of time. Pick a shower caddie that matches the rest of your bathroom accessories for a cohesive look. Avoid caddies that are made out of organic materials such as hemp, since they will eventually get ruined with the constant water exposure.

Wall vs. Basket Caddies

There are two main types of shower caddies -- the basket type, which can be hung or placed directly on the floor, and the wall type, which is mounted on a corner in the shower area. Wall shower caddies save you space since they take up a narrow, vertical area with several layers of shelves. Basket caddies often can take in more items and are simpler to install. Some basket caddies can be hung directly on the shower knob or some can be placed on the sink.

Suction-Cup Caddies

There are shower caddies available today that are very simple to install -- they make use of suction cups to adhere to the bathroom wall. This type of bathroom caddie is designed to carry lightweight toiletries such as razors, sponges and small bottles of shampoo. You can place them on the shower wall, and they often come in shelf and basket designs. This is ideal for temporary locations such as dormitories or rented apartments.

Size Matters

Shower caddies vary greatly in terms of size, form and material. Choose a shower caddie that fits your toiletries -- use smaller caddies for smaller items such as razors, pumice stones and sponges. Larger, sturdier caddies should be used for bottles of shampoo and shower gels of at least 500ml in capacity. As a general rule, stainless steel shower caddies are more durable than the plastic ones. Multilevel caddies are available for those who have a lot of different toiletries in their shower stalls.
