It's not surprising that coupon books are a very popular Valentine's Day gift. A coupon book costs little or nothing to make, is infinitely customisable and you can include coupons that are tame enough for your sweet old grandmother or sizzling hot for your lover. Give a book full of one type of coupon -- for example, a year of baked goods -- or coupons for a variety of items and services. But, be prepared to redeem those coupons on demand.

Coupon books make great kids' gifts, especially when the coupons are for things that will allow the two of you to spend time together. Include coupons for small outings, such as "Good for One Walk Around the Neighborhood" and "One Trip to the Pool" along with more elaborate trips to the zoo or the movies. Put in a few treat coupons too, such as a new toy, a special batch of cookies or a day free of chores.

Your friends would like to spend time with you, too, so give them coupon books filled with opportunities to do just that. Make one redeemable for one food-cart lunch on you, and another for a weekend road trip to anywhere. Give a coupon good for an afternoon browsing through antiques shops -- or at a basketball game, if that's more your friend's speed. Let them take advantage of your particular skills by requesting a homemade scarf in their favourite colours or an oil change when needed.

Many times senior citizens feel that they have enough "things," so a coupon book is an ideal gift. Give a promissory note for Sunday brunch once a month or a game of golf every other Saturday. A coupon to spade up a garden bed or pressure-wash the house will be appreciated, as will more frivolous notes such as "This entitles the bearer to one chocolate-dipped cone at the local ice cream emporium."

Coupon ideas for your sweetheart can range from romantic to sexy. Take some of the load off your lover's shoulders by giving a coupon promising to do a much-hated chore every day for a week, then follow it up with one for an uninterrupted bubble bath -- after which you will clean the tub. Lovers of either gender will enjoy the opportunity to pick out a new piece of sexy lingerie, whichever of you wears it. Spice up coupons for dinners and movies with a few for kisses, foot massages and spicier encounters, and you'll both have an enjoyable Valentine's Day.
