A small nursery requires creative storage solutions and furniture arrangements to make the space functional and attractive. The traditional furniture placed in a baby's room, like the crib and changing table, take up a large amount of the floor space, leaving little room for a play area, storage or other furniture. Try different room arrangements along with using space-saving techniques to make the most of the room.

Furniture Choice

Since the furniture takes the most floor space, the style you choose affects the space used. One way to save space is to choose furniture that does double-duty. For example, a lower dresser can also serve as a diaper changing station so you don't have to get a separate changing table. A crib with drawers underneath serves as storage for things like sheets and clothing. Another way to save space with the furniture is to pick smaller pieces. Instead of a regular crib, choose a mini crib. Some mini cribs are convertible into a twin bed once your baby outgrows the crib, so this option is also economical. Choose a smaller dresser, changing table, rocking chair and any other furniture you include in the room.

Closet Organizer

Rearranging the closet layout allows you to make better use of the space. Since a baby's clothes are a lot smaller than an adult's, you end up with a lot of wasted space. Add a second bar in the lower half of the closet to provide yourself with more hanging space. A customised closet organiser allows you to add drawers or extra shelves in the closet based on the items you want to store in it. For a cheaper option, buy a set of freestanding drawers to place on the floor in the closet. An alternative for the floor is to place a toy shelf or toy box inside the closet to free up floor space in the room.

Storage Ideas

Additional storage units in the room help you keep the room organised and function. A window seat or bench with storage inside is a simple solution. If you have a rocking chair in the room, add an ottoman that opens up for storage. You can store the things you need for nursing inside the ottoman to keep it off the floor. A coat rack or pegs and hooks on the wall allow you to hang items in the baby nursery. Things like coats and diaper bags work well for hanging.

Go up

Instead of focusing on the floor space in the room, take advantage of the height. Floor-to-ceiling shelving gives you storage for small baby gear, diapers, toys, books and other items you want to keep in the room. To keep your baby safe when he becomes mobile, make built-in shelves that won't tip over. The built-in option also allows you to customise the shelves to fit the height of the room exactly. If you choose freestanding shelves, attach them to the wall so they won't tip.
