Like most appliance models, each year manufacturers redesign a product, add enhancements, change the look and introduce a new line of models ranging in price. The same applies to stand mixers, and with so many to choose from, it can be tough to decide how to get the best value for money. However, the key to choosing the perfect mixer lies in a few distinct features and deciding which ones apply to you.


Do you bake for four or 40? The capacity is one of the biggest factors in determining the price of a stand mixer. Some mixers have bowl capacities of up to 8 litres (7 quarts). This is ideal if you plan on baking an average of four to five loaves of bread per mixture. Otherwise, do not waste money and counter space on a mixer that is too big. Consider investing in a mixer with a capacity of no more than 5.7 litres (5 quarts).

Bowl design

The bowl design is another aspect of stand mixers that is dependent on personal preference as well. The more common wide-bottom bowls allow you to easily add ingredients to the mixture while the mixer is in operation, but can sometimes make it difficult for all the ingredients to reach the whip when trying to mix small amounts. However, this is rarely an issue because most people do not use stand mixers for small items that can be whisked by hand. The other choice in bowl design is a taller and narrower design, which makes it more difficult to add items while the mixer is in operation. This bowl provides a more evenly distributed batter or dough because the design keeps the ingredients falling to the bottom of the bowl, where they can be mixed effectively. The taller bowl design helps you whip smaller items with ease.


Most people buy stand mixers for their durability and capability to mix a large amount of ingredients, which may be too much for a hand mixer. Therefore, the motor for your stand mixer must be effective enough to be able to handle the capacity of the ingredients you plan to mix. According to Serious Eats, the wattage advertised on most models means vary little because this is usually the number of watts consumed by the machine, not produced. The wattage produced by a machine is an indicator of how powerful it really is, but unfortunately these numbers are rarely advertised. The power-consumed wattage is how much power the machine requires to operate, and in this case, it is wise to pick the mixer with the lower amount of watts.

Design and attachments

For most, the category of design adds nothing more than a sense of personal appeal to a product. Even though we all know this on some level, a consumer is always drawn first to the product that is attractive. However, one design feature that is important for stand mixers is the method by which the whisk is brought into contact with he content of the bowl. Some models feature a lifting mechanism that lifts the entire bowl up towards the whisk, while other mixers have the bowl staying stationary on the base and the whisk tilting back at about a 45-degree angle to release from the bowl. The tilt-head whisks need more kitchen counter space than their counterparts. This is the key difference between the two designs, so if you're short on space you should consider purchasing the type of mixer where the bowl is lifted to the whisk.
