Becoming a parent changes everything in a person's life. Gifts for expectant parents can be sentimental or practical, expensive or inexpensive, and can be for the baby or the parents. Whatever your objective, it is important to tailor your gift to suit the parent's unique needs and tastes.

Gifts to Capture the Moment

The birth of a child is an exciting time for both parents. With emotions on high, parents will want to savour the memories for years to come. A journal to capture parent's thoughts and feelings during this exciting time can make a terrific keepsake gift. A baby scrapbook can also be useful for parents to record changes in their baby's first years of life. A digital camera of camcorder will allow parents to capture baby's important moments and share them with family and friends.

Between spitting up and diaper leaks, babies go through a lot of clothing. Purchase outerwear that has snaps, allowing for easy access to diapers, and attached boots for feet. Socks are cute, but babies tend to kick them off, leaving them with cold feet. When purchasing clothing, think a few months ahead. Babies grow out of newborn sizes very quickly. It will be helpful for the parents to have clothing on hand for when their baby reaches three or four months. Don't forget about mom. With her maternity clothes now too large and her pre-maternity clothes still too snug, reward mom with some post-maternity clothes.

Practical Items for Baby

Babies need many things. Create a gift basket containing all the mundane items that new parents will go through quickly, such as washcloths, diaper rash cream, diaper wipes, baby bottles, bibs, baby soap, baby powder, lotion and diapers. Place all the items in a plastic baby bathtub or diaper dustbin and top with a beautiful bow.

Gifts for the Parents

With all the focus on the baby's needs, parents' needs often get neglected. Becoming a parent is a tremendous life change. Parents will be exhausted during the first few months of their baby's life. Suffering from loss of sleep and lack of energy, they will likely not have the time for routine tasks such as cooking a meal, cleaning the house or walking the dog. A new baby in the house usually means these chores get neglected. Give mom and dad the gift of time. Offer to do the grocery shopping, hire a maid service for the day or deliver a hearty homemade meal.

Electronic Devices

A baby monitor is a great gift for first-time parents who are most likely nervous about leaving their newborn unattended. The monitor allows parents to take a few moments for themselves to shower, sleep or spend time together without worry. A cordless phone is an appliance all parents should have. Cordless phones allow parents to have a free hand to be attentive to their newborn without neglecting their friends or relatives who are calling to check in.
