Wedding dresses come in a variety of lengths, fabrics, styles and necklines. If a bride-to-be chooses a sleeveless gown, she may need a jacket when the weather cools or for photographs. When selecting a cover up for a wedding dress, there are many choices of fabrics and styles. Shawls are very popular and can be made of lightweight organza or a heavy wool-blend for cool weather, while jackets offer more structured coverage. Think about both what matches the wedding dress and what looks best on the bride.

Wedding Jacket Neckline

Choose a neckline that complements the bride and the wedding dress. Many jackets meant to be worn over a wedding gown are cut short, and some will have a collar. A bolero jacket would look flattering on a long straight gown. A scoop neck will frame a high-necked bridal gown nicely. A V-neck or shawl can be overlapped in front with a fancy pin or clasp to show more of the gown beneath.

Wedding Jacket Sleeve Styles

A cap sleeve is elegant and will show off toned arms. For a great cover up during colder weather, opt for a half sleeve or a long-sleeved jacket in a heavier fabric. Short sleeves will keep a bride cool and look beautiful during pictures. A three-quarter sleeve looks stunning on a ballerina-length gown. The sleeves of a jacket may be a different fabric than the body of the garment. Bring swatches of the wedding dress whenever trying to match a gown to new fabric.

Fabric Choices for Wedding Jackets

Many brides choose to have a jacket made in the same fabric as the gown. If that isn't possible, try a rich bouclé, tulle or brocade to add interest to a full long gown. A charmeuse or chiffon will add a delicate touch to a gown with a great deal of beading or detail. An iridescent taffeta or silk satin will add a bit of glamour to a simple wedding dress or short straight gown. Dupioni silk, silk organza and shantung add an essence of the far east. Lace and fur are high-fashion statements.

Wedding Jacket Styles

A jacket design is as important as the design of the wedding gown. Wear a cape or an A-line coat with a long straight gown to add some drama. A wrap, shawl or stole looks best when pinned with an elegant jewelled clasp that will catch the light. The length of the jacket may be very short, with just enough fabric to cover the arms and across the breasts. Some jackets, on the other hand, are designed to reach the knees. Choose a style that complements the wedding dress.
